Pete Crow-Armstrong

The Mets selected high school outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong with their first pick, 19th overall, in the 2020 MLB Draft on Wednesday.

The pre-draft rankings had the California teenager as high as 10 (The Athletic) and as low as 25 (Fangraphs).

Crow-Armstrong is the third consecutive high school bat taken in the first round by the Mets, following Brett Baty in 2019 and Jarred Kelenic in 2018.

Here’s what Perfect Game, who had Crow-Armstrong ranked 24th, had to say about the newest member of the organization:

He’s viewed as one of the headier, more instinctual players in the class, and combined with his plus athleticism and speed those instincts make him arguably the best outfield defender in the prep class. He’s always shown good feel for contact, but it wasn’t really until early this spring that he started to turn on balls and launch them pull-side, something scouts had been waiting to see. He’s viewed as a potential above-average hit tool type of player with the aforementioned defensive value and athleticism, and if teams are optimistic about his long term power projection, he’s a candidate to come off the board higher than this ranking.

While they’re done for the night, the Mets will have five more picks on Thursday, including a compensation selection for losing Zack Wheeler in free agency. Be sure to check out our draft primer for more information.
