In connection with MLB Pipeline releasing their updated Top 100 prospect lists, the site has also updated their list of each team’s Top 30 prospects.  Considering what we have seen all season long, it should come as no surprise Gimenez and Alonso top the list.  From there, their list does seem like a bit of a surprise:

  1. Andres Gimenez, SS
  2. Peter Alonso, 1B
  3. Jarred Kelenic, OF
  4. Justin Dunn, RHP
  5. David Peterson, LHP
  6. Anthony Kay, LHP
  7. Ronny Maurcio, SS
  8. Thomas Szapucki, LHP
  9. Mark Vientos, 3B
  10. Desmond Lindsay, OF
  11. Tomas Nido, C
  12. Jordan Humphreys, RHP
  13. Adrian Hernandez, OF
  14. Corey Oswalt, RHP
  15. Francisco Alvarez, C
  16. Shervyen Newton, SS
  17. Freddy Valdez, OF
  18. Gavin Cecchini, MI
  19. Jeff McNeil, 2B/3B
  20. Luis Carpio, MI
  21. Gregory Guerrero, MI
  22. David Thompson, 3B
  23. Simeon Woods-Richardson, RHP
  24. William Toffey, 3B
  25. Stephen Nogosek, RHP
  26. Ali Sanchez, C
  27. Luis Santana, 2B
  28. Patrick Mazeika, C
  29. Drew Smith, RHP
  30. Eric Hanhold, RHP

Looking over the list, the one thing that stands out is how much of this list is comprised of talent acquired over the past calendar year.  Kelenic and Woods-Richardson were from the 2018 draft.  Alvarez and Valdez were signings from this year’s international free agent signing class.  Additionally, Toffey was recently acquired from the Oakland Athletics as part of the Jeurys Familia trade.

Really, if you go further, much of the talent here was acquired over the past two years.  In addition to the aforementioned players, Peterson and Vientos were from last year’s draft.  Mauricio and Hernandez were the two players who received the highest international bonuses from the Mets last year.  Moreover, Nogosek, Smith, and Hanhold were players who were acquired via trade last year.

In sum, 12 of the 30 players ranked were brought into the organization over roughly the past 13 months.

Looking at MLB Pipeline‘s preseason rankings, there were Chris Flexen (9), Luis Guillorme (10), and Jacob Rhame (30) no longer qualify as they have surpassed rookie status.  Marcos Molina (8) was released, and Wuilmer Becerra (19) was designated for assignment.  Jamie Callahan (23), P.J. Conlon (24), and Gerson Bautista (29) have each made appearances in the majors, but their rookie status remains in tact.

The players who were dropped from the list who have not been taken off the roster or played in the majors at any point were Jhoan Urena (17) and Quinn Brodey (28).

The noticeable omissions from this list are Nabil Crismatt and Tyler Bashlor.

Crismatt, 23, had a strong beginning of the season in Double-A earning himself a promotion to Triple-A.  With Crismatt, the one thing you consistently look towards is his outstanding change-up, which is a pitch which could carry him to the majors.

With respect to Bashlor, 25, it’s an odd omission when you consider his mid to upper 90s fastball, terrific curve, and his having pitched well in his limited chances in the majors. In addition to being on the 40-man roster and on the active Mets roster currently.

Overall, this ranking shows how much the Mets have improved their farm system over the past two years.  As each of these players develop, and as the Mets continue to find outstanding prospects in the international market, the Mets Top 30 will continue to look better and better.
