Despite the Mets being unwilling to permit him to play in Brooklyn or anywhere in the United States last year, the Mets have decided now was the time to have the 18-year old shortstop prospect Andres Gimenez play for the Mets Single-A affiliate Columbia Fireflies. So far, Gimenez is making the Mets look like geniuses.

In three games, Gimenez is 5-16 with a double, homer, and two RBI while playing a good shortstop. In this small glimpse, Gimenez is already showing why he was ranked MMN‘s ninth ranked prospect heading into the 2017 season.

The Mets signed Gimenez in July of 2015 and gave him a $1.2 signing bonus. He was regarded as the best hitter out of Venezuela when the young shortstop signed.

During his first pro season in 2016, Gimenez slashed .350/.469/.523 with 20 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 13 stolen bases and 46 walks compared to only 22 strikeouts.

Overall, it’s been an impressive start for Gimenez, and based upon the stats we’ve seen from him in the Dominican Summer Leagues and is wealth of talent, we should see him continue to put up terrific stats this season. It also appears that he is going to force the Mets to make a decision as to where he is best suited with Rosario being so close to the majors. With the way Gimenez is playing, that decision may need to be made sooner rather than later.
